APOPO is a Belgian NGO specialising in detecting and safely removing landmines worldwide (e.g. in places like Angola and Ukraine). They train rats and dogs to help in this mission by sniffing out mines and other leftover explosives. They also train rats to detect tuberculosis and smuggled wildlife products, as well as supporting agroforestry and tree planting initiatives.

No, of course not! 😭 The adoption is a donation to the non-profit, with a digital adoption certificate as the reward. No ownership of actual rats is being transferred and you will not wake up with one on your doorstep (as funny as that would be).
